How to check your PF balance?

Employee Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) is responsible to manage the provident fund schemes formulated by the government of India. EPFO is supervised by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India, and is assisted by the Central Board of the trustee.

EPFO has now launched a digital platform which makes withdrawal and tracking of your PF status very easy. Employees need to create a user ID and password to access the services offered by EPFO. Here is the complete guide on how to check your EPF status online.

How to login to EPFO member portal


It is quite simple to login to the EPFO member portal once your account is activated. Take the following steps to login to EPFO member portal:


  • Open the EPF portal.

  • Complete the required details on the registration page.

  • Make sure that you provide the correct details at the time of registration, as later, you will be using the same details to login to the portal.

  • Once the registration process is over, you can now log on to the portal.

  • If you have registered using PAN number, you need to select PAN number from the ‘Select any One Document’ option and enter your PAN number while logging in to the portal.

  • Cross check all details before getting PIN.

  • You will receive an authorization PIN.

  • Enter the authorization PIN, and you will be registered on the portal.

Once you enter the member portal by entering specific details like address, name, mobile number, document types etc., you can download the EPF passbook from the website. You must have the 12-digit UAN (Universal Account Number) to activate your account on the EPF member portal. You can find the UAN number on your salary slip. Your UAN number must be activated before you log into the EPF account.

  • Go to the EPFO website.

  • On the login page, enter the UAN number and password that you received when you were activating the UAN number.

  • Enter the captcha in the box.

  • Click the enter button to submit it.

  • You will be logged in to your EPF account.

How to check the EPF status online?

EPF balance on the EPF Portal

You need to visit the official website of the EPFO or Employees’ Provident Fund Organization to check the balance online. Follow these steps for seamless access:

  1. Go to OUR SERVICE section. You need to choose FOR EMPLOYEES from the drop-down menu. You will be redirected to http://www.epfindia.gov.in/site_en/For_Employees.php?id=sm2_index

  2. Click on FOR EMPLOYEES again.

  3. Select MEMBER PASSBOOK from the service menu. You will reach the login page for your passbook.

  4. Login using UAN and password.

  5. Once you are logged in, you will find Member IDs of all accounts linked with your UAN. It includes all previous and current EPF account.

  6. Select the member ID to check the passbook.

  7. Click the member ID of the EPF account for which you want to check the balance. The passbook will open on the screen.

2. Umang App

You can also check your EPF status online using the Umang App.

  • Download the Umang App from the Google Play Store or App Store.

  • You can check the EPF status online using the Umang App.

  • With Umang app, you can check balance related information and you can also download the passbook using this app.

Here is how to check your EPF status online using the Umang app:

  1. Open the Umang app and select EPFO.

  2. Click on the “Employee Centric Services”.

  3. Click on the “View Passbook” and check the EPF balance here.

  4. Enter the UAN ID and then click on the GET OTP.

  5. You will receive an OTP on your registered mobile number.

  6. Enter the OTP and click on the login.

  7. Choose the member ID of the company for which you want to check your EPF balance.

  8. The complete information will open in front of you.

How to Check the EPF Balance Offline

If you are not comfortable in using online platforms to check EPF balance, you can check it offline by taking the following steps:

1. Check the EPF balance using SMS: Send a message to 7738299899. The format of the message should be EPFOHO UAN ENG. For example, your UAN is 123456789101 and your preferred language is English. The SMS should be EPFOHO 123456789101 ENG. For Hindi you can replace ENG with HIN. Here are the languages you can use to know your EPF status:

2. Checking EPF Balance by missed call: You can check your EPF balance by giving a missed call on 011-22901406. For this, your mobile number must be registered with UAN and UAN account must be linked with Aadhaar card, PAN card and bank account.
